They sit on a crew manned by madmen. When the action starts, their instructions are clear: pull away. Let the two real madmen from AQUA get to work. Do their thing. Play heroes. Navy knows how to read people, at least a little. He sees it in their eyes: no one here’s keen to lose their life fighting a primordial monster. He’d been the same before a meteor threatened to kill them all.[break][break]
Navy and Kyle are left alone. Sitting on the deck, looking at his watch, the sheriff figures they have a few more minutes before showtime. Kyogre is predicted to cross their path along its course to Lilycove. They’re to piss it off, weaken it enough to think better of going near a city. Like everyone else tracking the beast, they don’t know how to find it until it starts moving. They’re forced to stay reactive rather than proactive.[break][break]
He hates that. He hates not being able to charge. He hates waiting. Hoenn demands a certain patience from its champions. Of all the qualities a champion can possess, patience isn’t one of the sheriff’s virtues.[break][break]
So he sits on a folded lawn chair, sitting a soda and waiting. Glancing at Kyle, he thinks about how distant they’ve been lately. There’s no animosity between them, they both just get busy. The longest they’ve been together was when Kyle saved Navy’s life. There’s a lot of catching up to do. Lots to talk about. Even more to think about.[break][break]
And all Navy can say, looking out over the sea, is…[break][break]
“Damn am I glad it’s you here, and not that psycho fuck Silph.” A description that could go either way, among the two Silphs that matter.

he had been preparing his smeargles for the operation, just as navy asked him to. one of them prepares imprison before moving to transform into the smeargle that knows origin pulse.

"there's, like, five that i know. you have to be more specific than that."

angel, eve, stormy, matias, fern... one way or another, each of them fit the bill. coincidence brought him to befriend each of them separately without the convenience of previous ties affecting the other.

a realization comes to him, and he quickly whips his head to navy's direction.

"wait, did anything new happen?" he asks. "i'm pretty sure you hated league generally, not someone from there specifically."

did he just learn about some old controversy that either brother was involved in? was he just being idealistic and frustrated that not everyone shares his values? kyle probes to get further information.

Which, of course, explains everything to anyone who knows Navy. Olivier and Flora were hand-me-downs from Gabe. Two more links to his brother were severed. His eyes stay on the sea.[break][break]
“I thought he was a hero, man. The way you talked about the guy for years. I thought…” Nothing dramatic cuts him off. Kyogre doesn’t interrupt them. Navy falls silence of his own accord. His eyes stay on the sea.

kyle scratches the back of his head.

"shit, that was my bad." he thinks. he's not sure if an apology is required in this situation or not, but it can't hurt. "well, i'll go talk to him."

he was aware that matias has been a scourge for a lot of people, but he's never been aware of the specifics.

"people in the league aren't heroes," kyle reminds him. "that's why i kept trying to tell you i'm not one."

he leans over the railing and pushes his hand up his hair as if trying to clear his head. despite trying to appear calm to offset the emotional mood from navy, kyle starts to stress himself.

"what happened exactly?" he asks. "did you get in a heated debate or something in a place that invokes paranoia? it's difficult to see how simply trying to destroy the core ends to that."

“We met for a little bit.” There’s still a muted quality to his voice, like he’s reading off old phone numbers. “In my office. Talked about it. Both of us said we wished the council would just…do something. Deal with Eternatus. Not just take forever.” And what a glorious moment that was, to hold out hope that someone would take action. He seemed a true hero in that moment. Then reality set in.[break][break]
“We both said it was dumb. Not without the council backing us. What if it woke up.” The thought sits between them, cooking. Stewing. Both of them saw the power of the fourth son under poisoned skies. He fought the black knight as an equal.[break][break]
“So when the League sent us down to mine some ore, on one of those little missions that’re gonna fuck the region royally when it’s filled with power spots, he decided he was gonna. Wouldn’t listen to reason. It was either I fight him or I risk letting him destroy Dewford. Maybe the rest of the region would have a chance, but if Eternatus woke up and came right through that rift…town would be done for.”[break][break]
All those people he was charged to protect. All the people who looked to him for justice. The people whom he’s come to love as his own. Navy lights up a cigar. He’s already died once, this won’t hurt him.[break][break]
“He’s no damn hero, but the rest of you could be.” Hand trembling, he looks at gathering clouds. “You should be.”

kyle can only shake his head at matias' behavior.

"i would have ran," he confesses. "you took a gamble, and, well, i'll miss that bird."

he tries to hold himself back. there's no point in pointing out the obvious mistakes that he could have fixed when hindsight is 20/20.

"do you want to know how i translate his actions?" he doesn't wait for a response. "no one's doing anything anyways, so he might as well try something rather than nothing. if it triggers a disturbance of any kind, then it breaks the stalemate."

it's an unorthodox method, but it's one that welled from the impatience of someone who got disregarded by fate and society.

"he's just this dumb, edgy, wannabe hero," he tells navy. "the world already hates him, so he doesn't mind being seen as a villain as long as he gets what he wants. as far as i know, it's to get rid of rocket, but..."

he scratches his head more furiously as he tries to defend matias' name but realizes that actions speaks louder than words. there's no redeeming him when every deed he has made contradicts the intended result.

"he's just so fucking inconsiderate, and he wonders why no one likes him! next time this happens, don't provoke him. treat him like he's a kid with a tantrum. if other methods fail, use my name to guilt trip him."

kyle starts kicking the railing of the ship they are on, thinking how MATIAS SILPH was probably fucking around mt. chimney instead of trying to better himself.

“Kyle…” Navy can’t believe what he’s hearing. With Kyle, the response he gives isn’t anger. It’s disbelief. Hurt. Pain.[break][break]
“Kyle, he could’ve hurt people. He didn’t give a shit if he killed everyone in that town. Sure, maybe it would’ve killed Eternatus, but…Kyle.” There’s no attempt to sound cool, no ego. Just a man struggling to string his thoughts together.[break][break]
“This guy has a fucking god on his side. He thinks he can be the judge of what’s a good play and what isn’t. I get it, he’s your friend man. Probably was before he got Groudon. But…but…”[break][break]
There are tears he’s fighting back, at the corner of his eyes. The sky grows overcast. They’re here on important work. All the same, now that he finally has Kyle, one of the few good things during the dark days of childhood, the words come unbidden.[break][break]
“…he’s fuckin’ changed, man. And if I got some god acting like that…I hope you’d do the right thing. I’d want you to kick my ass. Give me some spiel about kicking my villain arc in the balls. If you’re his friend, stand up to him.”[break][break]
Lightning strikes overhead. Rain falls. A perfect crescendo to the impassioned plea. Below them, the ship tosses and turns. The show’s going to start soon.[break][break]

one final kick stops the inner turmoil with the frustration that wells up from a friend forcing himself on the deeper end of the pool. he collects his thoughts, ending the process with a deep breath.

"don't worry. i will. that's what aqua is for, though i'd still rather get to him before the council decides on his fate."

a contingency plan wasn't something he'd have for people he'd consider his friends. if anything, he was always looking for an excuse for matias to personally stab him in the back to get rid of that limitation.

he recalls one of the smeargle in the mean time.

"and i wasn't defending him. i was just trying to give you context that he's still human." he clarifies. "if you were to be like that, i don't think i would give up on you as well anyways."

kyle looks beyond the horizon as their ship closes in on their target.

"but if you did mention he's changed. do you also think i'm different after ho-oh?"

And I wouldn’t give up on you. He thinks with manic desperation, a thought he’s had plenty of times. He’s often wondered what would happen, should a day come where Kyle’s less Kyle and more Ho-oh.[break][break]
“Not much.” He lies. Even as the words cross his lips, he spots them for the obvious lie that they are. “…big bird’s made you more like me. Or maybe it was the region. Someone like you, getting to sit on the sidelines and play your video games? Wrong time. Wrong place. Wrong universe.” That last word is spoken with derision. Matters of the multiverse are beyond him. Only one person has ever put it into terms his mind can understand.[break][break]
But they have more pressing matters. Kyogre rises from the water like, an ancient god defending its territory. Humans are foolish things. They and they alone would see a god and dare to fight it in its natural domain. Some might call it arrogance. Kyogre doesn’t call it anything at all. There’s a manic look on the beast’s face as it fires an origin pulse right for the ship.[break][break]
“Kyle!” Navy screams, ripping a pokeball free from his belt. Showtime.

"yeah," he responds with a chuckles. "funny how you weren't really you either until recently."

michael navidson, the person who was selfish enough to sacrifice the world for the sake of the one other person that meant more than himself once upon a time. right now, he wasn't much better than kyle.

perhaps ho-oh's influence was the world's workaround to reach story beats that wouldn't have otherwise been achieved since the trigger was nonexistent.

kyogre ruins the topic that kyle wouldn't have approached.

an attack shoots their ship, causing major damage in the hull. kyle jumps off the ship and into the water, carrying his smeargle in his arms as a suicune appears over the water's surface to catch ho-oh's avatar.

"the imprison strat doesn't work!" he yells over to navy. "not sure why it worked with the weird suicune, but it doesn't for this kyogre!"

the smeargle opens up a hyperspace hole to take navy from the ship into a layer of ice over the suicune's footing over the water.

That last remark before the action starts makes him clench his jaw. With all the noise going on around them, only the fluctuation of his cheek hints at how hard he’s grinding his teeth. He feels twenty years removed from that person, but it must seem a matter of months for one who doesn’t remember Galar.[break][break]
He hates that he loves this place. That remains true regardless of circumstance.[break][break]
When the Smeargle pulls him onto the ice, he doesn’t protest. His pokeball is ready. Tossing it out, Arthur strides across the ice. Their sync stone activates, synergizing their emotions. Arthur’s calm demeanor clashes with Navy’s worry.[break][break]
They meet somewhere in the middle, with the Pokemon’s emotions winning out. Skidding across the ice, Kyogre tries to break free. It looks at the trainers with recognition. Navy’s been the annoying thorn in its side since its rampage began.[break][break]
Arthur comes in hot, thunder streaking from his raging fist. The thunder punch is met by a roar. Kyogre blasts the armored dragon with a near point-blank origin pulse, tossing him all the way back to Navy’s side.[break][break]
“Think that pulse seemed a little weaker.” When he speaks, he’s all business. “Come on, let’s keep up the pressure!”

ash takes time to form under the heavy rain that the kyogre's presence starts, but he eventually gets the raikou done. the large figure of the beast stands beside its brother, howling as it tickles the sky for a drop of a lightning bolt that accompanies the thunder.

the suicune runs up, ice forming in its wake as it continues to barrage the kyogre with waves of sheer cold, repeating an endless cycle of creating spikes of ice around the kyogre, and the calamity itself breaking through it effortlessly.

"smeargle!"

the pokemon was his candle in this dark situation.

another hyperspace hole appears in front of the kommo-o, with the end of it leading above the kyogre. the portal itself wavers, as if its temporary state of stability only gives them a few seconds to act on it.

Tamer and dragon both look at the rift created by the Smeargle. Neither needs to communicate with the other to understand what needs to be done.[break][break]
Navy isn’t in the business of sending his soldier off alone. Raising his hand, he channels the dragon’s own power through the sygna suit. It surges with raw infinity energy, coalescing into a blast of fighting spirit. Arthur charges into the breach, thunder fist raised high, a parting shot from Navy accompanying him.[break][break]
The aura sphere and thunder punch make Kyogre reel. Two men aren’t enough to kill a god, but they’re damn sure enough to piss it off.[break][break]

controlling the beasts came natural to kyle as a bodily function, but the longer he spends time with it, the more he realizes that they really don't need their avatar's input. they act immediately, giving kyle time to turn to navy with a loud "thanks!"

without flinching, the suicune immediately sets up its walls of mirror coat, facing the attacks head on with its own crystalline barriers.

the raikou sits from afar, making use of the sheriff's field by trying to accumulate enough charges for its zap cannon. the projectile grows bigger than usual before it is fired off.

the smeargle is able to coordinate its bolt strike with the raikou's move thanks to the shared connection with ho-oh's avatar.

all the damage compounding on one another urges the rampaging kyogre to get the threats off of it and reset the positions in battle. it jumps into the air and splashes a huge wave of muddy water, pushing every pokemon near it away.
